Mess Hall Press : Screen Printing for Teens

Run by a volunteer staff of local artists, graphic designers and communication professionals, Mess Hall Press teaches the fundamentals of the creative process through the art of screen-printing.

Since early 2005, MHP has offered Madison high school students the opportunity to gain valuable arts experience in a design studio setting.

Our approach involves working collaboratively with students at each stage of the creative process, from concept to creation. We emphasize hand-drawn type and designs over computer-generated graphics, and also screen-print everything we do by hand.

In its short existence, Mess Hall Press has:

- printed countless posters for community events and organizations

- designed and sold its own line of organic t-shirts celebrating sustainability

- had its work featured in a two-month residency at the Overture Center Galleries

- had its projects featured in a national, traveling exhibit sponsored by the AIGA (American Institute for Graphic Arts)

- partnered with Artists Image Resource, a program of the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, on a long-distance series of collaborative prints

- seen a handful of past students head off to prestigious art schools
